One of the questions I hear a lot is: “How does a Realtor® get paid?” It’s a great question—and one you should feel comfortable asking! Real estate commissions are negotiable. There isn’t one standard commission that every agent or brokerage charges. The amount and structure should be discussed clearly so you understand what you’re agreeing to and what services you’ll receive. If You’re Selling a Home When you hire a real estate agent, your listing agreement will spell out the compensation you’ve agreed to pay your brokerage. Depending on the transaction, a seller may also choose to offer compensation or concessions that can help a buyer with certain transaction costs, including costs related to their representation. The important thing is that you have choices, and those choices should be explained before you sign anything. If You’re Buying a Home Before touring homes with an agent, you'll typically have a written agreement explaining how your agent will represent you and how they will be compensated. Depending on the property and the terms negotiated in the transaction, that compensation may be paid by the buyer, negotiated with the seller as part of the offer, or handled through another agreed-upon arrangement. Ask Questions! Real estate has changed, and I never want my clients to feel confused about what they're signing or paying for. My job is to explain your options, answer your questions, and make sure you understand the costs and services involved before we move forward. Thinking about buying or selling on the Oregon Coast?
